Broadcast Audience Research Council has been established in  July 2015 After TRAI  recommendations. The primary motive of the BARC is to provide accurate TRPs ( Target Rating Point ) of Tv channels.

 BARC is an autonomous ‘not for profit’ body owned by advertisers, ad-agencies, and broadcasting companies. It also represents “The Indian Broadcasting (IBF), Indian Society of Advertiser( ISA), and Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI)”.

What BARC does?

  • BARC calculates the viewership ratings for this, they have installed bar-o-meters in many constitute household. It records the viewing details and also audio watermark (put prior to a podcast) of content. 
  • Under, New Consumer Classification system ( NCCS), 12 Household has classified.
  • Classification of these households has been calculated according to the education level of the wage earner and ownership of the consumer durables.
  • It has also calculated the data on viewership habits across age and socio-economic group.

 Target Rating Points (TRPs)

The main objective of TRPs is to evaluate the viewership and according to this marketing and advertising agencies give Ads to Tv channels. A person who watched more than one minute has accounted for a viewer.
